Functional Ontology addresses this question by reconstructing the fundamental operations through which every manifested configuration acquires continuity, differentiation, and developmental orientation.
As one of the two fundamental pillars of Meta-Para-Ontology, Register Ontology explains what reality is, while Functional Ontology explains how reality unfolds. Functional Ontology reconstructs reality as a dynamic system of universal functions active throughout every level of Manifestation.
These functions are:
The Recall Function — continuity, memory, persistence; the causal function of time.
The Differentiation Function — distinction, structure; the causal function of space.
The Actualization Function — emergence, novelty; the causal function of evolution.
These three functions constitute the operational dynamics underlying every configuration of Manifestation. Every phenomenon emerges through a unique proportional organization of Recall, Differentiation, and Actualization, allowing the same functional architecture to account for the continuity, structure, and evolution of reality across every level of organization.
This functional triad also reveals the structural correspondence between domains that have traditionally been studied in isolation. Functional Ontology localizes the distinct identity of each domain within a common functional architecture, demonstrating that they express different configurations of the same underlying functional organization. In this way, it provides a rigorous ontological interpretation of the ancient principle “As Above, So Below,” thereby reconstructing the structural correspondence between the microcosm and the macrocosm within a precise philosophical framework.
